Two US retailers have announced they will not stock Grand Theft Auto VI after details emerged that the game's boxed "physical" edition contains only a download code and not a disc.
Video Games Plus (VGP) and Loot Box Gaming posted statements to their social channels saying they won't carry GTA 6 under their current policies, which prioritize genuine disc-based physical releases and media preservation.
What retailers said about the 'code in box' physical edition
VGP — a company that highlights almost 40 years in business — wrote that its policy refuses to carry physical games that only include a download code. The retailer said it will only support a version that ships with an actual disc and wished Rockstar well for the planned 19 November 2026 release.
Loot Box Gaming made a similar stance, saying the store was founded on a love for physical media and its preservation. The shop added that if a product cannot honour customers who pay for it, they have no business selling it, and that they will not support GTA 6 if the code-in-box detail is accurate.
Pricing and industry context
Push Square's coverage notes both the boxed physical version and the base digital edition on the PlayStation Store are priced at $80, while an Ultimate Edition is $100. The move to a code-only boxed version illustrates a broader industry shift toward digital distribution and lighter boxed offerings.
Retailer pushback underscores that, at least at launch, consumers won't be able to hold a disc-based copy of GTA 6 — a change some sellers find unacceptable on principle.
What remains unclear
Details on regional variations, any potential later disc-based releases or different retail strategies remain unconfirmed. Both retailer statements were shared publicly on social media but did not indicate any legal or contractual actions beyond refusing to stock the code-in-box product.
As the situation develops, any future decision by Rockstar to release a disc-based edition would, according to VGP, make the title eligible for stocking by retailers that currently refuse it.
We will follow updates around GTA 6’s physical release and retailer responses as more official information becomes available.
